Verses for Life: God's Word Goes Mobile

by Mark Cutshallby , NCF Northwest  |  June 06, 2017  |  Type: Kingdom Impact

Calvin Freitas is a senior front-end engineer, who uses his coding skills at Amazon to create websites and web applications used by millions of people around the world. He humbly describes them as, “big projects with big impact.”

If the significance of his day job isn’t enough, take a look at what he’s been building with his programming talents after hours: Verses for Life—a Bible verse memory website and iPhone application that could change your life.

Freitas, a giver through National Christian Foundation Northwest, built the first version of his verse memory website over eight years ago.  In January 2016, he released the Verses for Life app for iPhone that puts the practicality and convenience of memorizing Holy scripture at your fingertips.

In 2017, Verses for Life has already attracted 2,000 downloads.  Says Freitas, “Verses for Life gives people the opportunity to learn, memorize and apply God’s word in any given life situation.”

“Verses for Life gives people the opportunity to learn, memorize and apply God’s word in any given life situation.”

Freitas learned the value of Bible memorization 15 years ago as a student at the University of Nebraska. “I had friends involved in The Navigators who used the Topical Memory System.  Navs’ founder Dawson Trotman created it using simple flash cards.”

In 2009, Freitas combined his faith, innovative spirit, and web programming skills to create the first version of the Verses for Life website. The website and the app include the Topical Memory System—content provided by permission of NavPress.

Freitas plans to make the app available to more people in more languages “to reach more tribes and nations with God’s Word.”  He’s set to begin building an Android version this year.

When asked which verses have been most meaningful to memorize, Freitas is quick to recite 2 Timothy 3:16-17: “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work."

His translation of Scripture is personal: “Committing these words to heart helps me to live the way God calls me to live. We all have different gifts and capacity for spending our time and energy. For me, [Verses for Life] has been an opportunity to work on an extra, little side project.”

A not-so-little endeavor with worldwide application.
